The public beach of Rojas will welcome visitors at any time of the year! The sea and nature here are always special and seductive at any time of the year. In the winter, when our coast experiences a longer frost and the sea slowly cools down, you can start enjoying real winter pleasures by skying along the sea, skiing along the sea and when spring approaches, the impressive ice stacks can be seen on the Roja coast. Not every year in Latvia there is enough cold and long winter, thats why the ice stacks on our side do not occur every year.

In the spring, when ice is already gone and birds slowly begin to come back, then it's time to take a quick spring walks along the sea and watch birds. In the spring (May) on the beach after the winter sleep, the The Blue Hope Piglet returns, the author of the work is the artist from Roja - Maris Grosbahs. Our "Blue Piglet" have already become popular not only for locals, but also the guests are happy and captivate it in photographs.
In the summertime, you can enjoy warm sun, swiming and a variety of sports activities such as beach volleyball, football, but for children there is a nice, colorful playground. At permitted places in the sea you can take a ride with water bikes or kiteboard, as well as various other extreme sports activities.
The beach area is well-equipped with toilets, dressing booths, wooden walkways, benches. Beach area is adapted for people with disabilities - adapted walking boardwalks, amenities, viewing and turning platforms. Also now people in wheelchairs are possible to get to the beach and enjoy unforgettable moments. There are parking places for disabled people at the car park. Free Wi-Fi internet access is available at the beach parking place.

On the Roja beach there is new wooden walkway which can also be used for people with functional disorders, also has a billboard displaying information for blind and partially sighted people in the braille. People with visual impairments can get information about plants in the area of Roja seaside dune, get acquainted with the Rojas beach scheme tactile card, and you can find information on available infrastructure and information on how to behave on Rojas beach.

On the beach, it's also possible to taste delicious food and lovely hospitality in the Beach Bus Café. Brilliant way to spend sunny summer days at sea. (more information in the section - where to eat?)

It is forbidden in the dune area:

• Making tents;
• Creating bonfires;
• Place vehicles outside the designated areas;
• Entering vehicles in unplanned and prohibited places - lawns, dunes, beaches;
• Throwing waste on the ground;
• Without the permission of the Rojas County Council to ride a watercourse, deltaplan or a helicopter on the beach. It is prohibited on a public beach to stay with a dog during the swiming season (V-X).

For information and observation:

• Roja's official swiming area - from the North Pier to the length of 800 m, towards the Kolka;
• Rojas swiming place is waiting for every visitor, but you need to be tolerant to yourself and other visitors;
• Pedestrians go to the beach only on pedestrian roads and paths;
• Cars are parked only on designated parking areas;
• Motor vehicles without special permission are not allowed to move around the Roja bathing area or dune area;
• Garbage needs to br collected and disposed in garbage cans;
• We do not plant, we do not break the branches and do not damage the underlying;
• Dogs are not be allowed on the Roja swiming area;
• Making tents and burning bonfires are not allowed.

As early as the 13th century people lived in this area - the Livonian tribes, who also gave the name to the river. This is the Baltic Finnish word and in Estonian means - "mud river", but in the Livonian language - "grass". The Roja river starts near Valdemarpils and it has about 10 small tributaries. In ancient times sailors used these tributaries for going inland. Baron Hahn of the Lubezere manor exported his products through the river Roja - alcohol, wood, etc. to Riga, St. Petersburg, Holland (17th century). Also today, the river has been adapted to boating and walking along the river banks.

Boating enthusiasts have an opportunity to rent canoes (up to 15 people) or a suitable pontoon for unhurried leisure, to take a trip along the interesting Roja River in the length of 14 km.

Here you can easily get access to the Roja River, and visitors have access to different types (rowing boats, kayaks, SOT) of boat rental. Ride along the river Roja takes about ½ day.

Stadium of Roja is one of the best in all north Kurzeme. It was opened already in 1973. The stadium offers: the lawn football field (110x65 m), basketball court, sand volleyball field, hockey arena, running track at 400 meters and sectors. Under the spectators' area there is a gym, 2 tennis tables, showers, toilets and other facilities needed for athletes.
During the summer period various types of sports camps and competitions take place.

NW mole reaches 430 m in length and SE mole is 658 m long. Today moles serve as sea gate.

Roja river is mostly surrounded by an old-growth (’virgin’) forest, where forestry activities have not been undertaken for already 100 years. Those are biologically old forests, which are quite rare in Latvia, rich in plants and animals. River shore is a habitat for beavers, otters, roe deers, red deers, boars, elks, grey herons, goosanders, common goldeneyes and various other bird species. Fish like perch, river lamprey, trout, pike, roach lives in the river.
The nature trail along the River of Roja offers 3 routes of various distance along the River of Roja and forests surrounding it – 2km, 7km and 15km, each of it marked with a certain colour. Choose the appropriate distance and hit the road – by foot, bycicle and boat during spring to autumn season and by skis - in winter.
A number of resting areas have been installed along the trail, with bences, tables, WC, swings, gymnastics construction, waste bins, as well as fireplace sites and tenting areas. There are also two boat piers - at resting areas in Žocene and Roja. At the start of the trail, a spring site has been set up, particularly used by locals, which like to drink the water from the Roja spring.

The route leads along local gravel and forest roads, and in some places along the P131 highway. Along the way, you can see several natural sites: one of the "Sun Stones", several large pine trees near the parking lot at “Kaltene’s Rocky Seashore”, and, while cycling along the old Kaltene road that runs right by the sea, you can stop to see some of the old homes of shipbuilders and sea captains, as well as enjoy the charm and tranquility of Kaltene’s rocky coastline.

Be sure to visit the historic Kaltene Club building and stop by one of Kaltene's cemeteries located right by the sea—always an interesting place to explore. The route takes you all the way to the Bird Trail, where you can admire the lives of seabirds in Kaltene. On the way back, stop by the company SIA “Kaltenes zivis” to purchase delicious seafood delicacies, visit Čībiņkalns and see the beautiful trees growing there.

If you want a meal along the way, visit the homestead “Cīrulīši” to enjoy homemade fish cuisine or take some tasty homemade wine with you. You can also take a detour to the “Kaltene Hills” nature trail, get off your bike, and explore this unique and interesting trail on foot.

Then, on your return toward Roja, you can ride part of the old Kaltene road again, then continue on asphalt until the turn onto Ķirķraga Street, which leads back to Roja.

Kaltene Seaside or Kaltene’s Rocky Seaside – an attractive rocky sea coast with dune pines and beautiful natural views. Here you can find rare Litorina Sea coastal formations – sediments rich in mollusk remains from the Litorina Sea period.

Kaltene Nature Trail with a Birdwatching Tower – by walking the approximately 800-meter-long trail, you will learn many interesting facts about the birds living in Latvia as well as migratory species. Along the trail, there are two observation platforms and a tower for birdwatching throughout the year.

Kaltene Stone Hills – about 1.5 km from Kaltene seaside, in the forest, there are large piles of stones called hills. Similar formations are not found anywhere else on the Latvian coast. Nature researchers believe these mound-like piles of stones, later overgrown with forests, formed several thousand years ago as the Baltic Ice Lake retreated.

Ģipka Beach – a white sandy shore with a well-maintained parking lot and beach. It offers the opportunity to enjoy the charm of the Baltic Sea far from the usual seaside bustle.

Ēvaži Cliff is the highest cliff along the entire Riga Bay coast. Its height ranges from 8 to 15 meters, and its length is 2.6 km. In size, Ēvaži Cliff even surpasses the Jūrkalne cliff.

Pūrciems White Dune – according to archaeological research, Stone Age fishermen lived in the extensive dune ridges located 300 to 600 meters from the sea about 4,200 years ago. A nature trail has been created along the banks of the Pilsupīte River.

The Pūrciems route can be combined with a visit to Kolka, which includes sightseeing at Cape Kolka itself, the ruins of the old Kolka lighthouse, the monument "Taken by the Sea," Kolka Evangelical Lutheran Church, the Roman Catholic and Orthodox churches, as well as the Kolka Livonian center.

The stops include Roja Dune on Talsu Street, from where K. Valdemārs first saw the sea. Then along Selgas Street to the Roja ambulance station, next to which the Roja Sea School used to be, operating from 1873 to 1915. A memorial stone was unveiled at this site in 1990. The Roja Maritime Fisheries Museum houses an exhibition about the historical development of shipbuilding, navigation, and fishing.

Kaltene is one of the main centers for sailing ship construction on the Kurzeme coast (49 sailing ships were built here), and it is also home to the houses of famous shipbuilder families. There is a stop at the Kaltene club (library). In 1899, this building was brought from Germany by the Baron of Nogales.

In Valgalciems, 32 sailing ships were also built. Continuing towards Uguņciems, you will find the ancestral homes of the Pūliņš family of lighthouse keepers and the famous sailing ship builder Mārtiņš Morgenstern.

For a walk around Roja, you can choose a route that starts at the Roja Sea Fishing Museum, then leads to Peldu Street and down to the sea. Walking along the rocky beach towards Riga, you will definitely notice the Roja Sea Boulder, which was once brought to our shore by a glacier.

The route continues along Jomas and Selgas Streets, returning back to Peldu Street and to the recreation park "Plocis," where you can enjoy time with children or sit quietly to relax. Next, head towards Sporta and Parka Streets along the Roja stadium and Skatepark, then to Roja’s main square, where the Culture Center and Roja Municipality are located.

As part of the ROJARAKU Art Laboratory and the ROJAL Cinema and Art Festival, artworks are displayed in Roja near the Culture Center, Roja Museum, by the Top store on Selgas Street, as well as at the Roja Hotel, Roja beaches, and the Roja harbor area.

From the Culture Center, the route continues along Zvejnieku Street past Roja Secondary School to Strautu Street. At Roja Art School, turn left to reach the rope bridge, where the artworks "Astrolabs" and "Teleportation" are located. Crossing the bridge, you will arrive at the new Souvenir and Local Producers' Market, where you can buy rural and forest products provided by local residents.

The route continues along Selgas Street to the bridge over the Roja River, where you can see the Roja harbor and yachts, then continues along Jūras Street and then Ostas Street to Roja’s central beach.

At the end of the walk, go to the end of Pier Z, from where you can watch sea birds, yachts, and fishermen heading out to or returning from sea fishing.

SUP Rental
SUP, or stand-up paddleboarding, is a new sport or rather an active leisure activity that has rapidly gained popularity worldwide and is also popular at “Melnsils.” SUP allows you to move across the water and cut through sea waves while standing on a wide, stable surfboard and paddling with a single paddle. SUPing at “Melnsils” is a relaxing form of water fitness with the added bonus of beautiful natural scenery all around!

Kayak Rental
In ancient times, kayaks were used for hunting on inland lakes, rivers, and coastal waters, but today, a kayak can be used to enjoy romantic sunsets or sunrises and unforgettable nature views and unique emotions. It’s also possible to reach the large river at Melnsils by kayak, where you can paddle upstream thanks to local residents who cleared the river of fallen trees, making the paddling and “hunting” route longer.

Price: 5.00 - 8.00 Euros per additional hour; 17.00 - 22.00 Euros per day.

Bicycle Rental
A bicycle ride can turn into an adventure, discovering undiscovered places and riding on nature trails and coastal routes where no one else has been! The offer includes bikes of all sizes for both adults and children. To ensure a safe ride with a child, we also offer helmets for rent. The bicycles are not intended for intense sports riding but for enjoying rides along the seashore or forest paths.

Price: 3.00 Euros per hour; 12.00 Euros per day.

What can bring immeasurable joy to children? The answer is simple – a mini zoo and playground within the camping area! The campsite has a small mini zoo with furry animal friends such as chickens and rabbits. Everyone, big or small, can come meet and talk to the “palm-sized” animals and even treat them with some tasty snacks. Young adventurers will love the ship-shaped climbing structure, testing their grip strength by hanging on rope vines, and challenging the wind’s resistance while swinging. Slightly older and more athletic visitors will enjoy chasing “flies” during badminton games, organizing their own small table tennis or novuss tournaments, and testing their hand precision with darts. The exposition of the Roja Sea Fishery Museum tells about the work and life of coastal fishermen in the North of Kurzeme, and about fish processing, starting from the beginning of the 20th century and up to the present, as well as about the contribution of K. Valdemārs in the development of the fishery, about small sea schools, shipbuilding at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries and our sailors.

Here you can learn about mending fishing nets, weaving on looms, tying sailors’ knots and speaking their language.

The route can be adjusted as needed. The long option is to walk along the wooden boardwalks, the sea-coast and the North Mole with a lighthouse at the end. The boarwalk leads along the oldest dunes that have overgrown with forest as well as the gray dunes.  There you can notice the various coastal plants growing here. The route can be continued back along the sandy beach. Most active travellers can “stretch out the legs” on the boulders of the North Mole and walk up to the very end of the Mole.
